The Green Fairy

Courtesy of Wikipedia, absinthe (commonly known by its street name as "the green fairy") is a distilled, highly alcoholic, anise-flavoured spirit derived from herbs including the flowers and leaves of the medicinal plant Artemisia absinthium, also called grand wormwood. Due to its high-to-extent-of-poison alcohol content, I do believe absinthe is banned in the most parts of US and and Europe and of course conservative Singapore and hence, drinking absinthe was just something I read about.

Recently, over at a house-warming, a relative whipped out a bottle and suffice to say he had eager help around the table for most of the night to finish the bottle. According to the experimental bar-tender, their poison for the night was taken like so:

The clear green liquid was poured into a glass. Sugar (raw brown sugar preferred here) is then added to a tablespoon with a splash of the absinthe. The mixture is then set aflame to left combusting for about 10 secs to allow the sugar to caramelize before pouring it into the filled glasses. The sugar helped to offset the bitterness of the drink but according to the testers, it was nevertheless a drink that definitely packed a solid punch.
