Honjin @ Robinson Road

We had a good quarter 1 at work, and as all good things are rewarded, we decided to reward ourselves with dinner and drinks @ Honjin. I had long heard of this restaurant, mostly from UOB dining promotions for their 1-for-1 buffets to attract their mainly working dining patrons. Well 1-for-1s are always the key words for Singaporeans because the place was packed by 7pm on a mid-week night. Good thing we reserved for 6:30pm, giving us a decent buffer before the crowds milled in to make our bulk orders.

What's Japanese without Salmon?! We had a galore tasting of Sashimi - salmon, tuna and tako, salmon fish head which came complimentary, salmon maki and grilled salmon.
The sashimi was fresh and impressively generous in their juicy thick slices.

Fried yummy things
When I saw sweet potato tempura on the menu, I was really delighted, its not often I get to see my old-time favourite available, so we ordered a huge portion of the yasai tempura along with some ebi and soft shell crab. The tempura was really good! The batter was light, and crispy and the sweet potato and carrots were so fresh and tasty! The same could be said of the potato coquettes, age tofu, and ton katsu - "Ichi-ban!". Generally the standard of the food remained above average, from the grilled and fried to the fresh and complimentary items.

And of course no Japanese meal is complete without my favourite Japanese curry noodles! Great with the ton katsu which we ordered to share. Though used to having it with rice, the ramen added a nice carbo touch as well.

For dessert, the girls decided to round off dinner with something special. You always see these 'hand-made' ice-cream desserts at most sushi and Japanese restaurants. They really looked good but disappointed to say, they weren't as good as they looked, rather artificial actually. The dessert of the day tasted heaps better.

In the spirit of the happy occasion and celebratory atmosphere, we ordered two huge bottles of sake. Suffice to say, plenty went down (pardon the pun) that night! Amist the toasts and the bottoms-ups, I managed to try the sake and it was surprisingly quite pleasant. Not normally a big fan, this one went down quite well with me. It was rather sweet and light and not like the usual dry versions I have tried before.
